5/27 and beyond: Three choice picks

3 right off the bat this week... Independent Lense on the history of Bloods Versus Crips; Speaking of civil rights, smarty pants can read about it thanks to Stanford Law; And, I love John Waters, won’t you? via Variety...

Now that May is over I can get around to last week’s play list—right after you hit up All Day Music on Facebook. And we should all give Adrienne Pheiffer a large, circular round of applause for bringing in great shows (in order to bring in great shows) for our radio station (and for so much more). Congratulations, A! And thank you for laughing.

Okay then: For whatever reason (could be Don Dean or Epicenter Sound) I can't stop it with Dub Side of the Moon, and I pretty much have no idea how the Easy (should we say, nasty?) Star All-Stars can pull off their latest move. It’s impossible. Did I mention that it’s impossible? And yet, there it is... so check it out.

And then, again a little late–this is more or less what we did last Wednesday:
1. Holding You, Don Blackman - Another Late Night
2. Give Me Your Love / Eddie You Should Know Better, Curtis Mayfield
3. Ooh Boy, Rose Royce - Music Magic
4. What you Wouldn't Do for Love, Bobbie Caldwell
5. Think About It, Lynn Colins - Think
6. and 7. Bring it Up / Funky President, James Brown

This 7" single was recorded August (or September?) of 1974 at Sound Ideas, New York and released in October 1974 on the album Reality, shortly after Gerald Ford succeeded Richard Nixon (after he refuses to surrender 500 tapes and documents which subpoenaed by the Senate Watergate Committee) in the "white" house. Cold Blooded is the B-Side.

8. Soul Vibration, Kool and the Gang - Hollywood Swingin’
9. You're the One for Me, Bobby, Marvelettes - Sophisticated Soul
10. Five to One, the Doors - Waiting for the Sun
11. Little Miss Lover, Jimi Hendrix - Axis Bold As Love
12. I Want You Back, the Jackson Five - I want you back
13. We Must Be in Love, Five Stairsteps - First Family of Soul
